The Nyakalengija Route (Central Circuit

The Nyakalengija Route  Central Circuit

The most popular trail into the Rwenzori Mountains is the Nyakalengija Route, also known as the Central Circuit. This is the route used by most climbers and trekkers because it offers the most complete experience of the Rwenzori landscape. It begins at Nyakalengija, near the town of Kasese, where visitors register at the park headquarters and meet their guides and porters.

The trail winds upward through thick montane forests, where the paths are often shaded by tall trees covered in moss and ferns. The sound of rivers and waterfalls accompanies trekkers as they climb higher. As you move toward the bamboo zone, the forest opens up, revealing sweeping views of surrounding valleys. The trail becomes steeper here and often muddy, especially after rains, which adds to the challenge.

Further along the Central Circuit, trekkers enter the legendary heather and moorland zone, characterized by giant heather trees and boggy sections. These moorlands are some of the most beautiful yet challenging parts of the route. Wooden boardwalks have been added in certain places, but many sections still require hikers to navigate through spongy, wet ground that feels like walking on a soaked mattress.

One of the great features of the Central Circuit is the network of mountain huts located at strategic points along the way. Each hut provides shelter, a place to rest, and stunning views. Camps like John Matte, Bujuku, and Elena Hut become familiar names during the trek, marking the progress as hikers move closer to the glaciers.

The Central Circuit eventually leads to the high alpine zone and the base of Mount Stanley, where climbers prepare for the final push toward Margherita Peak. From the glacier fields to the rugged summit ridge, every step of this ascent is extraordinary. Standing at the peak offers a rare and unforgettable view snow beneath your feet and endless African landscapes stretching far below.
