Gorilla Sectors and Their Habituated Families

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is divided into four main gorilla trekking sectors, each with its own unique habituated gorilla families.

Rushaga Sector (South Bwindi)

Rushaga h and most reliable trekking sectors. The families found here include Nshoas the highest number of habituated gorilla families, making it one of the busiestngi, Mishaya, Kahungye, Busingye, Bweza, Bikingi, Kutu, Rwigi, Tindatine, and Mucunguzi. Many visitors choose Rushaga because it offers a wide variety of families and often has better permit availability.

Buhoma Sector (North Bwindi)

Buhoma is the oldest and most historic trekking sector in Uganda. It is home to some of the first habituated gorilla families, including Mubare—the very first family to open for tourism—along with Habinyanja, Rushegura, Katwe, Muyambi, Binyindo, and Kanywanyi. Buhoma is a favorite among visitors who prefer gentle hikes, community interactions, and beautiful scenery.

Nkuringo Sector (South-West Bwindi)

Nkuringo is known for its steep terrain and adventurous trekking trails. The families in this sector include Nkuringo, Bushaho, Christmas, and Posho, which is still undergoing the habituation process. Although the hikes in Nkuringo can be more challenging, the experience is highly rewarding, offering strong, active gorillas and stunning views of the surrounding landscapes.

Ruhija Sector (East Bwindi)

Ruhija provides a peaceful and natural trekking environment with pleasant weather and excellent birdlife. The gorilla families living here include Bitukura, Oruzogo, Mukiza, and Kyaguriro. Ruhija is an ideal choice for trekkers who enjoy a balanced hike not too easy and not too difficult combined with a rich forest experience.
