The Nyamwamba Valley Route
The Nyamwamba Valley Route, once closed for safety and environmental rehabilitation, has begun reopening and is becoming a favorite for trekkers seeking an alternative path. This route offers a more scenic and less crowded experience, with trails that follow the Nyamwamba River upstream as it carves a deep valley between dramatic ridges.
The lower section of this route features fresh mountain air, waterfalls tumbling down rock faces, and lush vegetation lining the riverbanks. As the trail climbs higher, trekkers pass through the bamboo and heather zones, eventually reaching high-altitude valleys filled with giant lobelias and groundsels. The Nyamwamba Valley is known for its wide landscapes and the feeling of openness compared to the more enclosed forests of the Central Circuit.
For many trekkers, the highlight of this route is the series of glacial lakes scattered along the upper valley. Lakes such as Kitandara and Weismann are incredibly beautiful clear, cold, and surrounded by dramatic peaks. These high lakes reflect the sky and mountains like mirrors, creating some of the most breathtaking scenery in the entire Rwenzori range.
The reopening of this trail has added more flexibility and variety to trekking in the Rwenzori. Some hikers choose to combine the Nyamwamba Valley with the Central Circuit, creating a loop that allows them to explore an even wider section of the mountain range
