Travel Tips and Practical Information

To make the most of your visit to Queen Elizabeth National Park, it’s good to plan ahead and keep a few simple travel tips in mind.

First, pack appropriately. The park lies in a tropical region, so light, breathable clothing is ideal for daytime. Early mornings and evenings can be cool, so a warm sweater or jacket is useful. Don’t forget a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, and insect repellent. Sturdy shoes are essential, especially if you plan to go on nature walks or chimpanzee tracking.

Always carry enough drinking water and snacks when going on long game drives. While inside the park, you can buy refreshments at Mweya Safari Lodge or other visitor centers, but options may be limited in remote areas like Ishasha.

If you’re driving yourself, ensure your vehicle is in good condition a 4×4 vehicle is highly recommended, especially during the rainy season. Fuel stations are available in nearby towns such as Kasese and Katunguru, but it’s wise to fill up before entering the park.

When it comes to safety, Queen Elizabeth National Park is very secure and managed by Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) rangers who patrol regularly. However, always follow your guide’s instructions during game drives and never step out of your vehicle unless permitted. Keep a respectful distance from wild animals and avoid loud noises that could disturb them.

For travelers who enjoy photography, bring a good camera with a zoom lens, as you’ll find endless photo opportunities from close-up shots of lions to wide landscapes filled with elephants and crater lakes. Early morning and late afternoon light give the best conditions for taking stunning safari photos.

Lastly, consider combining your visit with other destinations in western Uganda, such as Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for gorilla trekking, or Kibale Forest National Park for chimpanzee tracking. This combination creates a perfect itinerary that showcases Uganda’s best wildlife and landscapes.
