LOCATION & ACCESSIBILITY OF SEMLIKI NATIONAL PARK
Semliki National Park lies about 52 kilometers from Fort Portal Town, in western Uganda’s Bundibugyo District. The park covers roughly 220 square kilometers of lowland rainforest within the Albertine Rift Valley, bordered by the Rwenzori foothills to the east and the Semliki River to the west. Its coordinates place it almost directly across the border from the Ituri Forest of the Congo, making it a natural extension of the Congo Basin’s vast wilderness.
Reaching Semliki from Kampala
Most travelers begin the journey from Kampala, Uganda’s capital. The drive covers about 360 kilometers to Fort Portal, a scenic route that usually takes five to six hours by car. From Fort Portal, you continue for another 52 kilometers along a winding road that descends through the Rwenzori foothills into the valley where Semliki lies. The final stretch is breathtaking rolling hills, banana plantations, and distant misty mountains greet you before you reach the park’s Sempaya Gate.
For those who love adventure, this route is ideal for a self-drive safari. The roads are generally in good condition, but the last portion toward the park can become slippery after heavy rain. A 4×4 vehicle is recommended, especially during the rainy seasons, to handle muddy or steep sections comfortably. Along the way, you’ll find small trading centers where you can stop for fuel, snacks, or to interact with the friendly locals.
Alternative Routes
If you are traveling from Murchison Falls National Park, you can connect to Semliki through Hoima and Fort Portal, a journey that takes roughly 7–8 hours depending on stops. From Queen Elizabeth National Park, the trip is shorter about 4 hours via Kasese and Fort Portal making it easy to include Semliki in a longer western-Uganda circuit.
Travelers who prefer air transport can book scheduled or charter flights from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield to Kasese Airstrip or Fort Portal Airfield, then drive to Semliki by road.
Getting Around the Park
Inside the park, movement is mostly by guided nature walks and 4×4 game drives. The park’s terrain varies from dense forest trails to open riverbanks, making it a paradise for both walkers and photographers. Visitors on self-drive safaris can use designated routes under the guidance of Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers, who ensure safety and share insights about the area’s ecology.
