The Legend behind the Lake

The Legend behind the Lake

Local folklore gives Lake Mburo its unique identity. Many generations ago, two brothers Kigarama and Mburo lived in the valley where the lake now lies. One night, Kigarama had a strange dream warning that danger would come unless they moved to higher ground. Mburo ignored the warning and stayed. When the valley flooded, Kigarama escaped to the hills, but Mburo was swallowed by the rising waters. To this day, the lake carries Mburo’s name, and the surrounding hills are called Kigarama.

This ancient legend gives a mystical aura to the park. Travelers often find it poetic that nature itself reclaimed the valley turning tragedy into a serene, life-filled landscape.

Wildlife and Safari Experience

Though Lake Mburo is smaller than other Ugandan parks, its wildlife concentration is remarkable. It’s the best place in Uganda to see plains zebras and impalas, which are not found in other parks like Murchison Falls or Queen Elizabeth. The park is also home to buffaloes, warthogs, topis, eland (Africa’s largest antelope), and a growing number of Rothschild’s giraffes, which were introduced in recent years.

Predators such as leopards, hyenas, and civets are occasionally seen, especially during night drives. Though lions were wiped out decades ago due to human-wildlife conflict, Lake Mburo still offers the thrill of seeing wild animals up close in a peaceful, uncrowded setting.

Bird lovers will find paradise here over 350 bird species have been recorded, including the rare African finfoot, papyrus gonolek, and shoebill stork. The park’s mosaic of habitats forest, swamp, and grassland makes it one of the most rewarding birding destinations in Uganda.
