Kyambura Wildlife Reserve

Kyambura Wildlife Reserve is one of Uganda’s most unique protected areas. Located within the greater Queen Elizabeth conservation landscape, the reserve is famous for the dramatic Kyambura Gorge, a lush forested valley carved deep into the savannah plains.

The reserve was gazetted to protect this rare ecosystem, which supports a population of chimpanzees isolated within the gorge. Over thousands of years, the gorge created a micro‑habitat where forest species could survive despite surrounding savannah conditions.

Kyambura is especially popular with visitors interested in chimpanzee tracking. Although sightings are not guaranteed due to the smaller population, the experience is deeply rewarding. Walking through the gorge feels like entering a hidden rainforest, complete with towering fig trees, dense vegetation, and bird calls echoing through the valley.

Beyond chimpanzees, Kyambura Wildlife Reserve supports monkeys, forest birds, butterflies, and plant species rarely seen elsewhere in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Safari travelers, Kyambura offers an excellent primate‑focused addition, connecting chimpanzee tracking with gorilla trekking in Bwindi or Mgahinga.
