Karuma Wildlife Reserve
Karuma Wildlife Reserve lies close to the iconic Karuma Falls on the River Nile, just south of Murchison Falls National Park. The reserve was established to protect the riverine ecosystem surrounding the Nile as it cuts through rocky gorges and forested banks.
Historically, the Karuma area has always been important due to the River Nile, which supports fish, birds, and mammals that depend on permanent water sources. Gazetting Karuma as a wildlife reserve helped protect this sensitive ecosystem from uncontrolled development and environmental degradation.
The landscape of Karuma Wildlife Reserve is dominated by woodland, riverine forest, and rocky outcrops. Wildlife includes antelopes, primates, reptiles, and a rich variety of bird species, especially those associated with river systems. While large mammals are less concentrated here than in Murchison Falls National Park, Karuma plays a critical ecological role by maintaining habitat continuity.
Karuma Wildlife Reserve is often appreciated for its scenery rather than classic game viewing. It is an excellent stop for travelers driving north or south through Uganda, offering peaceful nature encounters and photographic opportunities. When combined with Murchison Falls and later gorilla trekking in the southwest, Karuma adds depth to a cross‑country safari experience.
