Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve

Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve

Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve stretches across the semi-arid plains of northeastern Uganda in the Karamoja region. As Uganda’s second-largest protected area, it is a landscape of vast open savannah, scattered rocky outcrops, and distant volcanic hills. Long before formal protection, the area was home to nomadic pastoralist communities and large populations of plains wildlife. The reserve was gazetted to secure seasonal grazing lands, protect biodiversity, and maintain migration corridors for animals moving between adjacent protected areas, such as Bokora and Matheniko. Its creation reflects the country’s strategy of conserving both wildlife and the cultural landscapes shaped by human presence over centuries.

The reserve is renowned for its populations of large antelopes, including roan, hartebeest, and eland, along with plains zebra and buffaloes. Predators such as lions and leopards move across the plains following prey availability, providing occasional thrilling sightings for adventurous visitors. Birdlife in Pian Upe is also exceptional, featuring raptors, ground-dwelling species, and migratory birds that take advantage of seasonal wetlands and riverine corridors.

Pian Upe’s appeal lies in its raw, untamed character. Visitors experience a safari environment that feels untouched, with long, uninterrupted views of grasslands stretching to the horizon. Self-drive safaris are ideal here, allowing travelers to set their pace and explore remote areas without the presence of large tour groups. The pastoral communities of Karamoja also provide a cultural dimension, giving insight into traditional lifestyles that have coexisted with wildlife for generations.

Seasonality strongly influences wildlife visibility and accessibility. The dry months of June to September offer excellent game viewing and firm driving conditions, while the wet season transforms the plains into lush green expanses, attracting migratory birds and showcasing newborn wildlife. Accommodations are basic, often consisting of community-run lodges or bush camping options, allowing travelers to immerse themselves fully in the wilderness.

Pian Upe offers a complementary experience to forested gorilla habitats. It emphasizes the diversity of Uganda’s ecosystems, demonstrating that the country’s conservation landscape is more than just rainforests and mountain gorillas it is also expansive savannahs and plains that support a variety of wildlife species and cultural heritage.

From start to finish, the tour operator, guides, hoteliers, drivers, and everyone in-between was helpful, courteous, and attentive. The experience was wonderful in itself, but the people around us made it amazing.

No vegan food options in hotels.
