Bugungu Wildlife Reserve
Bugungu Wildlife Reserve
Visit Bugungu Wildlife Reserve located in western Uganda, bordering the northern section of Murchison Falls National Park. It forms part of the greater Murchison conservation landscape and plays a vital role as a buffer zone and wildlife corridor. The reserve stretches across open savannah plains, rolling hills, riverine forests, and seasonal wetlands that support a wide variety of wildlife.
Bugungu was gazetted as a wildlife reserve to protect animals that naturally move in and out of Murchison Falls National Park. Over time, increased human settlement around the park made it necessary to secure migration routes for species such as elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, and predators. By protecting Bugungu, Uganda ensured that wildlife could continue to roam freely without escalating human‑wildlife conflict.
The reserve is especially valued for its scenic beauty. Wide grasslands open up toward the Albertine Rift, while the River Nile system influences the vegetation and wildlife patterns. Birdlife is abundant, making Bugungu attractive to birdwatchers seeking species associated with savannah and wetland habitats. Although tourism infrastructure is limited, this is part of its appeal. Visitors experience a sense of true wilderness, far from crowds and busy safari vehicles.
Bugungu Wildlife Reserve is ideal for travelers interested in nature walks, birding, research tourism, and extended safaris that combine Murchison Falls National Park with quieter conservation areas. For safari travelers, Bugungu offers a contrasting landscape experience that enriches a longer Uganda itinerary.
