Bokora Corridor Wildlife Reserve

Bokora Corridor Wildlife Reserve forms an essential part of the Karamoja protected landscape, linking Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve with Matheniko and other surrounding ecosystems. Located in northeastern Uganda, the reserve covers semi-arid plains, open grasslands, and acacia woodlands, creating a natural pathway for wildlife migration across the region. Bokora was gazetted to preserve these wildlife corridors and maintain connectivity between reserves, ensuring that species such as antelopes, zebras, buffaloes, and predators can move freely in response to seasonal changes and food availability.

The reserve is less visited than Uganda’s national parks, which contributes to its sense of wildness and solitude. Visitors encounter rolling plains punctuated by rocky outcrops, seasonal rivers, and patches of woodland that provide shelter for both wildlife and birds. Raptors and ground-dwelling bird species thrive in Bokora, making it a rewarding destination for birdwatchers seeking species not commonly found in more frequented parks.

Tourism here is inherently low-impact. Most visitors arrive on guided or self-drive safaris that allow exploration without disturbing the habitat. Cultural interaction with the Karamojong communities adds depth to the experience, as travelers witness traditional pastoral lifestyles that have coexisted with wildlife for generations. The reserve exemplifies how Uganda’s protected areas balance human activity with conservation goals.

Travelers on a gorilla trekking itinerary, Bokora Corridor Wildlife Reserve offers a complementary experience to forest-based safaris. It highlights Uganda’s semi-arid ecosystems, expansive grasslands, and the critical importance of wildlife corridors. The reserve also demonstrates the country’s holistic conservation approach, showing that ecological networks, not isolated parks, are vital for the long-term survival of species.
