Katonga Wildlife Reserve

Katonga Wildlife Reserve is located in central and southwestern Uganda, stretching along the Katonga River basin across several districts. Unlike the open savannahs that define many of Uganda’s protected areas, Katonga is shaped by water. The reserve was gazetted primarily to protect the Katonga River and its extensive wetlands, floodplains, papyrus swamps, and seasonally flooded grasslands. These ecosystems are critical not only for wildlife, but also for water regulation, fisheries, and the environmental health of large parts of central Uganda.

The creation of Katonga Wildlife Reserve came at a time when wetland loss was becoming a serious concern. Expanding agriculture, drainage, and settlement threatened to destroy habitats that had quietly supported wildlife and local communities for generations. By gazetting the area as a wildlife reserve, Uganda recognized the importance of wetlands as living systems rather than wastelands. Katonga therefore stands as a conservation area focused less on spectacle and more on ecological function.

Wildlife in Katonga Wildlife Reserve is adapted to wetland and riverine environments. One of the reserve’s most notable species is the sitatunga antelope, a shy and semi-aquatic animal perfectly suited to swampy terrain. Other mammals include otters, bushbuck, warthogs, and smaller carnivores, while reptiles and amphibians thrive in the permanent water channels. The reserve is also exceptionally rich in birdlife. Papyrus specialists, water birds, and migratory species find refuge here, making Katonga one of Uganda’s most rewarding areas for birdwatching.

Katonga’s landscape changes with the seasons. During the rains, large sections of the reserve flood, creating a mosaic of shallow lakes and channels that attract fish and birds. In drier months, grassy plains emerge, allowing for guided walks and canoe-based exploration. Tourism here is low-impact by nature, relying on community guides, small-scale lodges, and activities that respect the fragile wetland environment.

For travelers journeying to or from gorilla trekking areas in western and southwestern Uganda, Katonga Wildlife Reserve offers a different perspective on conservation. It shows how Uganda protects not only forests and savannahs, but also the wetlands that quietly sustain life. Visiting Katonga adds balance to a gorilla safari, reminding travelers that conservation is as much about rivers and swamps as it is about iconic animals.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

You might be surprised to learn this, but do you really know about mountain gorillas? You may have seen them in pictures or videos online, but only a few lucky people get the chance to see them face to face in their natural habitat in the wild.

There is a fair amount of walking involved and changing elevations. Be prepared to awake very early to arrive at the top for sunrise. The guides were informative and I met some great people on the trip.

There is a bit of a queue in the morning for the bus, but it moved fairly fast.
