Toro – Semliki Wildlife Reserve
Toro–Semliki Wildlife Reserve
Toro–Semliki Wildlife Reserve lies in western Uganda within the Albertine Rift, an area globally recognized for its exceptional biodiversity. The reserve stretches across lowland forests, savannah grasslands, and riverine ecosystems close to Semliki National Park and the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains. It was gazetted to protect wildlife corridors and habitats that connect different protected areas across the rift valley.
The formation of Toro–Semliki Wildlife Reserve was driven by the need to conserve species that move between forest and savannah environments. This transitional landscape supports elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, primates, and a remarkable variety of birds. Its rivers and wetlands are especially important during dry seasons, when wildlife concentrates around permanent water sources.
