Mgahinga National Park
Gorilla Seeker, I’m back with more insights! Recently, we highlighted Mgahinga National Park alongside Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. As we discussed, Uganda has only two parks where gorilla trekking is possible: Bwindi and Mgahinga. These two parks are unique and share many similarities, particularly because about 98% of visitors to either park are primarily focused on gorilla trekking.
Because of this, you won’t see a typical visible park entrance at either Bwindi or Mgahinga. The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) organizes and regulates entry through the gorilla trekking permits. Once you book a trekking permit, you are guaranteed access to the park to embark on your gorilla trekking adventure.
So, when you arrive at the park gate with a valid gorilla permit, you simply walk in no extra gate fee is required. However to anyone willing to carryon some activities with the park, talk about nature walks among others, are required to pay the entrance fee upon entering the park.
To trek gorillas in Mgahinga, a valid gorilla trekking permit costs $800. However, besides the main activity of gorilla trekking, Mgahinga offers a wide variety of other outdoor activities and experiences that make a visit truly memorable.
Located in the far southwestern corner of Uganda, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is one of the most exciting wildlife destinations in Africa. Even though it is Uganda’s smallest park, covering just 33.7 square kilometers, it is home to some of the country’s most amazing natural sights. The park’s forests are often covered in mist, climbing up the slopes of three impressive volcanoes: Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Sabyinyo.
Mgahinga is more than just a park; it is a place where adventure and peace come together. Here, wildlife, culture, and nature exist in perfect harmony. The park is often called the place “where gold meets silver”, because the Golden Monkeys and the Silverback Gorillas live close to each other in the same forest.
For anyone seeking a close encounter with nature, an insight into ancient cultures, or the challenge of hiking volcanic peaks, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park offers it all. Every step through its misty trails reveals a story of beauty, survival, and discovery.
